Paul Martin's Business Update - April 30th, 2014

The Saskatchewan economy grew more last year than originally thought.

There are plenty of economists who opine on the performance of the economy but the granddaddy of them all is Statistics Canada and they have now tabled their 2013 report card.

The Prairie Provinces along with Newfoundland exceeded the national average of two per cent. And we passed it by a far margin.

Newfoundland, however, was in a class all its own growing roughly eight per cent last year. That is the kind of number you’d expect out of an Asian market. Saskatchewan was second at 4.8 per cent with all segments of the economy contributing. It’s also interesting to note that most economists were targeting last year’s performance in the 3.5 per cent range so this is a significant upward revision.

It even topped Alberta’s performance as the record grain crop coupled with continued population growth which contributed to retail and wholesale activity as well as residential construction. Even potash was a contributor in the first half of the year as exports in general added further lift to the economy’s performance.
