Canada-China trade deal bad for B.C. First Nations, says international investment expert

Canada's controversial trade agreement with China will come into effect Oct. 1. The Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement is not the first deal of its kind, but industry experts have said the protections for Chinese investors might have gone too far.

International Investment Law Professor at Osgoode Law School in Toronto Gus Van Harten says one problem is, the agreement with China does not include any requirements for Impact Benefits Agreements with First Nations, which are typical with resource extraction projects in traditional First Nations territories.
