Scraponomics Episode 80: Where to Take Stuff Friedland Doesn't Take

“Effectively, change is almost impossible without industry-wide collaboration, cooperation and consensus.” — Simon Mainwaring, award-winning branding consultant and social media specialist

As many of you already know, Friedland is a scrap-recycling company that processes metals, paper, various plastics, and electronics for recycling. But, what about the stuff we don’t take? From time to time, we do get inquiries about materials like wood, rubber, and Styrofoam. In those cases, I tend to recommend the following (and please note, none of these companies are paying me to say/type this):

For rubber recycling, check out American Recycling Center in Owosso, MI. They granulate many types of rubber together to make material that’s used for things like tracks and playgrounds. The one catch is that they currently don’t take rubber tires because the steel content within them makes it harder to granulate them. You can find American Recycling Center at americanrecycling.com.

For wood, I usually steer people toward Kamps Pallet, which has a location here in Lansing. Kamps takes unrepairable pallets, for example, and shreds them to create different varieties of mulch. You can find Kamps them at kampsinc.com.

For Styrofoam, check out Dart Container in Mason. A lot of people know that Dart is a manufacturer for Styrofoam and plastics, but not everyone knows they can process some of those materials for recycling as well. You can find them online at dartcontainer.com.

Friedland takes a lot of different materials for scrap recycling, but it’s interesting how different companies eventually find their own niche. What’s cost-effective for us might be undoable for another company, and what another company may be doing cost-effectively might not work for us. In those cases, at least we can point people in the right direction.
