A woman brutally assaulted in 2005 was hailed as a hero Thursday after coming back from India to testify against her attacker in a Fairfax courtroom. Hawes Spencer reports.

R.G., as she's known, never stared across the courtroom at Jesse L. Matthew Jr., whom she blames for creating "a vicious cycle of self-hatred." Gil Harrington, who contends Matthew killed her daughter, Morgan, came to express gratitude.

"It's only once in a rare while-- once in a very long while-- that an exceptional human being becomes the hero of a sexual assault. R.G. is one such exceptional human being."

As for Matthew, prosecutor Ray Morrogh didn't hold back.

"Even after 30-some years in this business, I still believe most people are good; but some people are very, very bad, and he's one of them."

Matthew was convicted earlier this month of rape, abduction, and attempted murder. Today's testimony could play a role in his sentencing in October. For WCVE News, Hawes Spencer in Fairfax. # Photo: Prosecutor Ray Morrogh comforts Gil Harrington.
