United Ireland debate kicks off after #NolanLIVE link-up with RTE

We had a Nolan Live Show with a difference on Wednesday night. We teamed up with RTE's Primetime programme in Dublin, for a joint programme, discussing key issues facing people on both sides of the border. A jointly commissioned survey looked at a series of issues, including views on constitutional options for Northern Ireland.

  • Only 13% of respondents in Northern Ireland wanted to see a united Ireland in the short to medium term.

  • Also in Northern Ireland, 38% of Catholics surveyed gave devolution as their preferred constitutional status in the short to medium term - compared to 27% backing in favour of a united Ireland and 14% for direct rule. 49 % of Protestants in Northern Ireland surveyed backed devolution, while 30% favoured direct rule and 3% opted for a united Ireland.

  • There was stronger backing for Irish unity as a longer term option. 66% of people surveyed in the Republic of Ireland and 30% in N Ireland said they would like to see a united Ireland in their lifetime.

  • But support levels fell sharply if Irish unity meant higher tax bills
