Capital Radio - First Anniversary Disc

Episode 584,   Nov 24, 2012, 04:20 PM

Much is written of the dark, early days of Capital Radio in London in 1973. In a glum industrial climate, a tough regulatory environment and fuelled by limited revenues from a puzzled client base, the station tried to find its niche. As is well-documented, its music policy shifted; and staff joined and moved on. A typical case of a station finding its feet, amplified by the challenges of being the first ever commercial 'ILR' music station to tackle the challenges.

But let's not forget the sunny days too. Hear here the audio from a commemorative 'first anniversary disc'. Enjoy the range of early presenters, whose very style reflects the diversity of this first 'heritage' station at the outset; and a few crafty words from the Chairman who seemed to reflect the on-air station character with ease.
