Get your first headship Stephen Drew - Headteacher, Brentwood County High School

“I have been Headteacher of Brentwood County High School in Essex since September 2012. This is my first headship and follows ten years at Passmores Academy in Harlow. Passmores moved from a position of falling rolls and a Satisfactory Ofsted judgement in 2001 to being oversubscribed and judged as Outstanding in 2008. At Passmores I held the posts of Head of History, Head of Humanities, Assistant Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and following academy conversion in 2011, Senior Vice-Principal.

“I did my PGCE at the Institute of Education in London in 1997. In my very first lecture as a student teacher the course leader said something that has been my absolute guiding principle throughout my career as a teacher. He said "As a teacher you can get your lesson wrong and then get it right next week or next year when you have sorted out the problems. Students get one chance at Period 3 on the first Tuesday in February of Year 8. They cannot have another go and cannot get that hour back. Therefore you have an absolute responsibility to be the best you can possibly be every single time you step in front of a group of young people. Anything less than total dedication and organisation is unfair to the students you are responsible for."
