From Afghanistan to Yemen, there are more than 40 conflicts taking place across the world, ranging from major wars to largely forgotten insurgencies. But the weapons and tactics used to fight these wars are constantly changing.

The BBC's Defence and Diplomatic Correspondent, Jonathan Marcus, has compiled three special reports considering what the wars which will be fought in the future might look like.

In his first report, he considers whether unmanned drones, which allow pilots to fire missiles at targets thousands of miles away and seen only on a video screen, are just the start of a new robotic arms race.
