How can we help different generations understand each other and bridge any gaps between older and younger people? The project 'Talkin' 'Bout My Generation' led by the charity London Youth, aimed to find out the views of young people and what they think about getting older.
In this audioboo recorded as part of the project young people shared their views.
London Youth as one of the featured charities in the Channel 4 / Big Lottery Fund programme Secret Millions will be trying to see if, as part of a new pilot project, they can help bridge that gap, provide work training opportunities to young people and make a difference to wider society, with the help of funding from the Big Lottery Fund .
Background information The Secret Millions is a brand new TV series where the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) and Channel 4 have joined forces to back radical ideas tackling some of Britain’s most challenging issues.
In the first of the five-part series London Youth pilots a project to create a platform for intergenerational skills sharing between young people and older tradespeople, working together to refurbish empty properties to be used for social housing.
This has the potential to provide opportunities for learning for all:
Young people will be given the skills and confidence to gain further training, apprenticeships or jobs.
Older people will have the opportunity to develop their skill set further through qualifications in coaching/mentoring and assessor work.
The project overall will promote greater understanding and respect between generations.
