The Nigerian army has begun what it calls "operations to rid the nation's border territories of terrorist bases and activities". This follows the state of emergency declared by President Goodluck Jonathan in three states in the north-east - Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. The president says the operation is designed to restore security and it follows an upsurge of deadly attacks blamed on the militant sect Boko Haram.
