Sep 11, 2013, 10:11 AM

Cllr Geoffrey Bowden, Chair of the Culture Committee, was interviewed by BBC 1 Breakfast TV today for a feature looking at council's and whether they should sell their art. He responded that most art is donated or bequeathed to the council on the condition that it makes it available to the public. The council's collections, including important pottery and work by famous artists such as Turner, enable the council to host major exhibitions and attract thousands of visitors to the city. This in turn provides an essential boost to the local economy. BBC Breakfast is to show the feature 11 September while a major Turner show at Brighton Museum runs 2 November- 2 March Cllr Bowden was asked first why the council is not selling its art.
