The hub of the oil patch in the southeast is the province’s most attractive city for residents arriving from other provinces.

A detailed breakdown of inter-provincial migration patterns shows Estevan is the most popular destination for those moving from other provinces, adding more than 10 per cent to its population. And, given that Alberta is the primary source of new migrants, the oil patch connection is pretty obvious.

Now, this evaluation looked at the period of 2006 to 2011 which coincides with the last census. We know that these trends have changed a bit since then as Ontario is now one of the most important sources of new citizens for us.

But in the period under examination, traffic between Alberta and Saskatchewan was most dramatic. When you add up to the ins and outs, Saskatchewan was a net winner in that period.

In real numbers Regina and Saskatoon attracted nearly half the 60,000 people who moved from other provinces but as a percentage of the local population Estevan led the pack followed by North Battleford and Moose Jaw.
