Paul Martin's Business Update - October 30th

The growth of the internet as a vehicle for everything from news gathering to business transactions is not as pronounced in Saskatchewan when compared to the rest of the country.

An examination of on-line activity last year puts Saskatchewan is sixth spot among the provinces, behind the Atlantic region and Quebec. It’s also behind the national average at 82 per cent of the population. The highest penetration is in BC.

However, on a local basis residents of Regina were among the most active in the nation…in second spot at 90 per cent behind only Kelowna.

Not surprisingly, the most common activity on the Net is email followed by on-line shopping and then banking or paying bills. And the growth of the handheld device – smart phones and tablets – is clearly evident, nearly doubling in two years to become the most common tool for going on-line.

The figures also show quite clearly what happened to the local video store. More than half of Canadians downloaded a movie or music or watched TV on-line last year as lifestyle patterns continue to shift towards doing things on our own schedule.
