Paul Martin's Business Update - December 4th

Former Moose Jaw resident Cory Olynik, now a Calgary-based thinker, writer and business advisor, has offered up an interesting idea on improving the performance of internal systems in the workplace.

He says he got the idea from that oracle of insight into the world of office work – Dilbert. When leaders are trying to streamline or refine processes to save time, he asks…who do they task with the assignment.

Usually it is the strong detail person who gets this job but he suggests looking elsewhere…to the rebels. As he puts it, who is best at finding shortcuts – the hard worker or the laziest member of the team?

Olynik’s point here is that unconventional approaches sometime bring the freshest and most innovative solutions. One American-based CEO had a practise of inviting new employees to a meeting to discuss ways of doing things better. The idea was to get fresh ideas. The only rule was…the employee had to be there less than six months so they had not yet fallen victim to internal corporate systems.
