TV ads for ScotiaBank tell us that we’re richer than we think. The question is…how rich are we?

We got a bit of an answer to that this week from StatsCan which issued a report on the worth of Canadian households and, as it turns out, Saskatchewan shows quite well. The report looks at the median point – that is the spot where there are as many people below and above. And ours is $274,000, second best in Canada behind only BC but a drop from first place at the beginning of the century.

Interesting as most would think Alberta with its higher incomes would fare better but this is the calculation of what’s left in the cookie jar after expenses are subtracted from revenue and the value of things such as real estate are totalled.

Whether we’re richer than we think depends on where you originally thought you were but the rising midpoint says everyone in the province – especially those at the lower end - is better off than they were 15 years ago.
