Paul Martin's Business Update - March 10th, 2014

Demand for labor in the province is showing no signs of letting up.

The monthly job numbers released by StatsCan on Friday again have Saskatchewan with the lowest unemployment rate in the country. In part this is because there were fewer people looking for work. But that does not mean employers were doing the same…in fact, they were still hiring.

There were 1,100 more people with a job in February than in January and 5,200 more than February of last year. But these numbers are little bit misleading. They are more positive than this would suggest.

The difference is in the nature of the jobs.

Full-time positions increased by 2,000 in the month and 8,000 for the year, replacing part-time spots which declined by 2,700 in the year and nearly 1,000 in February.

StatsCan also includes an estimate of population growth in these numbers and the February figure showed an increase of 16,700 in the past year suggesting the province is still attracting new residents in search of employment possibilities.
