Paul Martin's Business Update - April 8th, 2014
Getting a news release late on a Sunday night is not the usual practise in the business world but that is exactly what happened with the unexpected announcement that Bill Doyle will be stepping down as CEO of Potash Corp.
Every corporate head has to step down at some point but there was no talk of Doyle’s imminent departure prior to the company statement. And then to have it come out on a Sunday, when North American stock markets were closed, added to the surprise.
Doyle is the most visible CEO in the province. As head of the largest company in Saskatchewan, his profile rose during the failed hostile takeover attempt by BHP Billiton. His celebrity grew even more when he drew the ire of the Premier for issuing lay-off notices late last year but promising to keep dividends to shareholders intact.
Doyle’s replacement is an unknown in this province but given the attention anyone in this job gets, it likely won’t be long before his turns into a familiar face.
