Paul Martin's Business Update - April 28th, 2014
Much of the criticism of the Foreign Temporary Workers program that has surfaced in recent days seems rather narrow and, in some cases, protectionist and even racist in nature. But it is only one aspect of a broader story…Canada’s role in the global economy.
The Foreign Worker program looks at a small piece of the labor market. But there is much more to our global interaction which includes investment. And on this front, we are the heavy weights. We invest more abroad than foreigners invest here.
This is important in addressing the criticism that the Temporary Workers program sees income sent to the worker’s home country rather than staying here to stimulate the economy. On the investment front, we tend to repatriate more profits from abroad, the exact counterpoint.
All of this is about the flow of commerce. We are the beneficiaries of a global marketplace. This is especially true in Saskatchewan where the bulk of our economy is based on exports. Could it be that some of us like foreigners as customers but not next door neighbors?
