Community planning handbook - 2nd edition launch

Apr 30, 2014, 08:38 PM

Nick Wates launched the second edition of his community planning handbook at the Princes Foundation on April 30 2014, and I talked there to Nick and a group of friends about developments in the field over the past 30 years. It was a chance to meet up with Charles Knevitt, who with Nick co-authored the influential 1987 Community Architecture book, and with Jon Aldenton, who was director of the Tower Hamlets Environment Trust, later The Environment Trust. I helped set up the Tower Hamlets Trust with a contract from the then Greater London Council in1978, and later helped Nick set up the Hastings Trust, where he became director. I discovered that Jon is now development officer in Hastings. Suzanne Gorman was able to give us an up to date perspective on community-based planning and development, as board member of the East London Community Land Trust - the first of its kind in London.
