A double landslide in a remote village in northeastern Afghanistan killed approximately 2,000 people last week, including many rescuers. The rescuers and nearby residents had rushed to the scene after the first landslide, and were buried when the second one struck. The rock and mud in the mountainous region gave way after days of flash flooding. Bodies and homes were buried so deep that search and rescue operations were called off, and the site was declared a mass graveyard. A national day of mourning was held on Sunday. All entertainment programming was suspended on national radio and TV out of respect for the landslide victims and their families.
