The #OnThisDay take on the anniversary of the discovery by Captain Cook of the Great Barrier Reef on this day in 1770. The discovery was made when Cook's ship, The Endeavour, ran aground on the reef during his voyage in search of the fabled southern continent and became stuck for an entire day. The crew finally got their ship free by throwing 50 tons of cargo overboard.
