The #OnThisDay take on the anniversary of the official opening of the first Waterloo Bridge in the presence of was opened by the Prince Regent, the Duke of York and the Duke of Wellington on this day in 1817. Designed by John Rennie, the famous Thames crossing was built for the Strand Bridge Company, becoming known as Strand Bridge. It was a 2,456 feet long toll bridge made from granite, boasted nine arches with a span of 120 feet and was separated by double Grecian-Doric stone columns.
