The #OnThisDay take on the anniversary of the start of the #999 telephone emergency service, which became operation in the UK on this day in 1937. It was initially introduced in the #London area with an advertisement in the local newspaper to teach the public how to use it. GPO Operators were alerted to the 999 calls by flashing red lights and a klaxon.
