Stage 1: Cavendish's crash and huge crowds

Could the Grand Départ have been any grander? Hundreds of thousands of people lined the roads from Leeds to Harrogate, creating a festival atmosphere, but the fairytale finish for Mark Cavendish failed to materialise.

The Manx Missile crashed and Marcel Kittel won the opening stage for the second year in succession.

In this episode of The Telegraph Cycling Podcast, supported by Jaguar Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss the fall-out from Cavendish's crash and assess the success of the opening stage in Yorkshire.

We hear from Christian Prudhomme, the boss of the Tour de France, Simon Yates, who was making his Tour debut for Orica-GreenEdge and Fabian Cancellara who launched a last-ditch attack in an attempt to thwart the sprinters.

There's also a Tour debut for Telegraph correspondent Tom Carey and the first appearance of Gazzetta Dello Sport's Ciro Scognamiglio.
