The war crimes trial of Congolese Army Lieutenant Colonel Engagela, also known as Colonel 106, is under way in South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Lieutenant Colonel Engagela stands accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity after more than a thousand people filed complaints against him for raping, torturing and murdering hundreds of people. The UN says the trial is a test case for the Congolese military which has often failed to convict high ranking officers accused of sexual violence..
