If you have a dream of setting up your own business, becoming your own boss, western Canada is the place to do it.

Each year the Canadian Federation of Independent Business or CFIB assesses the best places in the country to start and grow a business. Once again the bedroom communities surrounding Calgary and Edmonton topped the overall ranking. Saskatoon stood in third spot while Regina was fourth. In all, seven of the top ten were taken by Western Canadian cities.

The CFIB also broke things down a bit more to make some comparisons among smaller communities, those under 150,000 in population. Lloydminster came out at the front of the line on this one. And Swift Current cracked the top ten list when measuring entrepreneurial presence…in other words, there is a higher-than-average propensity for locals to establish their own enterprises.

And among business owners, those who are most optimistic are the ones in Saskatoon. Regina stood in third place on this measure, behind St. John’s, Newfoundland. Lloydminster and Prince Albert made this particular list for smaller centres.
