Paul Martin’s Business Update – November 4th, 2014

Something big has happened in this province.

This year’s ABEX Awards, the annual recognition of business excellence staged by the provincial Chamber, was highlighted by two key facts. First of all it was Yorkton’s night – two category winners plus Business of the Year going to Yorkton Plumbing and Heating.

Here’s the other big thing. There were nearly a dozen winners at this year’s event and only two of the companies walking off with trophies were in existence before 2006. And those two took awards related to community involvement. The ones for commercial excellence are all relative newbies.

Basically, this year’s event marked the arrival of the new entrepreneurial Saskatchewan.

It may be one of the most important milestones in monitoring the transformation that has gripped the province for the past decade. Young people are now staying here rather than seeking opportunity elsewhere and, it is clear by all these awards that they are good at what they do. The provincial economy is forever changed.
