Truck drivers serving Lere, northern Mali, have gone on strike in protest at what they claim are illicit levies demanded by Malian customs officials. The drivers say they have to pay up to $1000 to customs officials - plus other sums given to armed groups - to bring a 20T load into Lere from Mauritania.
