The #OnThisDay take on the anniversary of Nancy, Viscountess Astor becoming the first woman to take a seat in Parliament on this day in 1919. Born in Virginia, she moved to England and married Waldorf Astor, MP for Plymouth Sutton, in 1906. When Waldorf Astor succeeded to the peerage Nancy was elected for the Conservative party and held her seat until she retired in 1945.
