The wounds opened by the Cuban Revolution of the late 1950s, and the ensuing hostility with the US, remain for many unhealed.

The new thawing of relations between Washington and Havana will be controversial for the family of Cristina Garcia.

She was born in the Cuban capital, Havana, but fled the country with her family in 1961, at the age of just two. Her father's farm had been seized by the government.

She's now a successful novelist, living in the San Francisco Bay area of California.
