This province’s manufacturing sector continues to punch above its weight class.

A couple weeks back the head of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association in Saskatchewan wrote a blog suggesting that as the resource and grain sectors feel the pinch of global commodity markets, manufacturers were in a position to fill the breach.

Well, the latest figures from StatsCan on this area come from November and the sector is holding up its end of the argument. Revenues by the province’s manufacturers rose by more than two percent from October to $1.4 billion or $45 million a day. That was one of the better performances in the country, surpassed only by a couple of Atlantic provinces. But on a year-over-year basis, the figures look even better.

Saskatchewan saw sales volumes increase by more than six per cent in the preceding 12 months, the strongest showing anywhere in Canada.

What’s especially noteworthy is that Alberta was down in the month because of the petroleum products. Saskatchewan, it turns out, is not as reliant on this segment of the economy.
