A proposed Irish Language Act includes plans for courts to be heard in Irish and Stormont business to be translated. Culture Minister Caral Ni Chuilin will publish plans for legislation to protect and promote the language today. Other proposals include official recognition of Irish place names and defined Gaeltacht areas in Northern Ireland where only Irish would be spoken.

Speaking in the Irish News today ahead of her bill the Minister says she is optimistic of overcoming opposition to it. Published today are the results of a survey, commissioned by Conradh na Gaeilge or the Gaelic League, which promotes the Irish language. Ciarán Mac Gillaveen from Conradh na Gaeilge.
