Anti-GMO campaigners angry about Arctic Granny

A Canadian grower has been given approval by US authorities - to develop genetically modified versions of the two varieties - that it will call Arctic Golden and Arctic Granny

The Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service says Okanagan Special fruits can plant the apples, which have been engineered to be resistant to turning brown when cut up or bruised.

The company says it believes the apples will help improve sales of the fruit by making sliced apples more popular and appealing.

Anti GM campaigners say the genetic changes that prevent browning could be harmful to human health.

Jeffrey Smith from the Institute of Responsible Technology says he's particularly concerned about what's called RNA interference - a type of gene silencing that occurs in the biotech process
