The conscience clause on gay equality looks dead in the water. Sinn Fein broke the news on Nolan Live last night. Caitríona Ruane announced her party's intention to block the proposed conscience clause. It aimed to create a legal exemption to gay equality law on grounds of strongly held religious beliefs. The DUP move followed the gay cake controversy after legal action was taken against a Christian-owned bakery. Caitríona Ruane last night revealed she had the required signatories on a petition of concern. What does that mean? It effectively means the proposed law change won't go through. (It would need majorities on both sides of the House and that support just isn't there).
