Rising inequality will be a key US election topic

"It's the economy, stupid."

Bill Clinton's famous mantra will be ringing in the ears of the American people come November the eighth, 2016.

That's the day they will get the chance to vote for their next President.

But with the US economic recovery well underway, what's likely to be the Republican game plan for a return to power?

Well, likely Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush has described the past few years as "a lost decade" for all but the very highest earners in America.

So - it looks rising income inequality will be a big issue for the Republicans.

We asked the US economist Irwin Stelzer at the Hudson Institute in Washington if he thought it was an issue too.
