Is life going to get harder for Turkey's working women?
Turkey’s Health Minister made headlines early this year when he said, “The best career for women is motherhood”. Now the government has proposed a bill which they say will make the lives of working women -especially that of working mothers- easier. Earlier this year Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced a proposal where working mothers would be given the right to opt for part-time work for several months after birth and still be paid as if they were working full time. They would also be able to continue working on a flexible basis if they wished. And mothers would be given financial aid for each child born. That proposal is now submitted to the parliament as a draft bill. Feminists argue, though, this is an attempt to weaken women’s existence in the workforce. My report from Istanbul.
