Episode 1029,   May 10, 2015, 11:01 AM

Years ago, radio stations were the only places big prizes could be won; now, you just pop in the newsagents for a Lotto ticket. In the seventies, however, the scale of prizes awarded on commercial radio were limited by its enthusiastic regulator.

Enjoy here, an early example of commercial radio's largesse; and its determination to build its local brands. On 'Don't say hello. say Metro', you won if you answered your phone with the word 'Metro' and then guessed an answer. The jackpot rose £1 a day until claimed. The first ever winner was on 17th May 1975, with the lucky Geordie claiming £88. On this example, the enthusiastic participant was not quite so fortunate.
