Expanding UK airports provokes controversy

Airport expansion is a controversial issue, especially, here in Britain. The new Conservative government is expected to make a decision soon on whether to increase airport capacity in the south east of England. Should London's main airport, Heathrow, get another runway? Or would it be better to expand Gatwick, to the south of the capital? A final report from an official commission is expected within the next week. Some though believe it would be better for the planet if people were discouraged from taking to the skies in the first place. Anti-airport expansion groups here in the UK are pressing for a new tax on frequent flyers, to curb demand. The more you fly, the more tax you would pay. We invited Gavin Hayes, director of the campaign group Let Britain Fly, who's opposed to it, and first, Robert Barnstone of the anti-expansion Heathrow Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise, or HACAN, who supports it to explain why there is so much division on the issue.
