Jonny Dymond visits the National Museum of Iraq and talks to its Director of Education

The news that Britain intends to sign up to the Hague Convention on the protection of ancient cultural sites comes too late for the treasures of Mosul and Nimrud in Iraq, destroyed by ISIS. But it is a moral boost for those who struggle to protect cultural artefacts from the impact of war. Earlier this year, the Iraq museum – looted in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion - reopened to the general public. The museum holds some of the jewels of the Babylonian, Sumerian and Assyrian civilisations that existed thousands of years ago in Mesopotamia.
