Derry City and Strabane District Council has refused to grant a licence for an amusement arcade - following an objection from the city's top policeman. Caesar's Palace on Strand Road is owned by the local businessman Jim McVeigh, but the application was made in his son's name. Foyle PSNI Commander Tony Callaghan objected on the grounds that Jim McVeigh has a recent conviction for criminal damage to the North West Regional College - estimated to be around £95,000, for which he was sentenced to 10 months in prison and served 6 months. Members of the council's planning committee also heard concerns about the impact on young people of the arcade. Our reporter Teresa Craig has been speaking to Willie O' Donnell who is the students liaison officer at the College. These were some of the concerns raised at the council meeting. CLIP 1

Teresa also spoke to Jim McVeigh about those concerns. He says he'll appeal the decision. CLIP 2
