NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City auction house says it discovered a pencil drawing by French post-impressionist painter Paul Cezanne on the reverse side of one of his watercolors. The watercolor, "Trees Along A Road," is being sold at Christie's on Nov. 12 by a New Orleans collector whose family purchased it in 1956. It could fetch up to $800,000. The discovery was made two weeks ago during a routine conservation as it was being prepared for the auction. The drawing also offers a clue to the probable date of the watercolor's execution, which was previously unclear. Experts say it looks similar to an 1884 painting housed in a Pasadena, California museum. Earlier this year, unfinished sketches were discovered on the backs of two Cezanne watercolors at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.
