Preparations are underway for the formation of a Joint Integrated Police (JIP) unit.
The JIP will handle security during the transition period. This is one of the provisions of the peace agreement signed by the government and the SPLM/A – IO.
Under the arrangements, the government and the opposition will contribute equal numbers towards the unit of five thousand four hundred personnel that will be deployed within Juba, Bor, Malakal and Bentiu.
The United Nations Police (UNPOL) operating under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is ready to provide training and logistical support to the JIP, as part of its mandate to support the peace process.
