The population of South Sudan is estimated at 11.6 million people.

The projected figure has been revealed as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) prepares to launch the 2015 State of the World Population report.

The report also indicates that life expectancy in South Sudan stands at 53 years for men and 55 years for women.

Ibrahim Sambuli, UNFPA Deputy Representative in South Sudan says the projections also reveal that there are more men than women, in contrast to other countries.

“We have close to 52% being men and 48% being women. Those who are below the age of 18 are 51%”

The last census conducted in 2008 put the number of people in South Sudan at 8.3 million.
