Why "aboriginal heritage" matters during court trials

A Prince George man has been convicted of kidnapping and extortion, and sentenced to eight years minus time served. The punishment could have been longer, but his aboriginal heritage was taken into account using a Gladue report. Gladue reports are used in some cases to provide background about aboriginal offenders, their upbringing, and the social and cultural factors that may have contributed to their criminal history. We speak to Preston Guno, a former prison corrections officer, transition worker, and manager of various outreach program for indigenous youth about their use.
