Impact of Dredging on Coastal Communities in Lagos
Dredging is an excavation activity usually carried out underwater, in shallow seas or freshwater areas with the purpose of gathering up bottom sediments and disposing of them at a different location. This technique is often used to keep waterways navigable. It is also used as a way to replenish sand on some public beaches, where sand has been lost because of coastal erosion.
According to the oldest man in Okun-Alfa community in Lekki area Eti-Osa who died in 2014 Alhaji Mudashiru Atewolara he said dredging in Lagos started as way of reducing breeding ground for mosquitoes which was a threat to the health of the colonial masters. But decades later dredging is now a vital in urban development along the lagos coastline.
