The National Legislative Assembly today rejected a proposal to form a national crisis Ad-Hoc committee to fix the economic problems facing the country.

The urgent motion for the establishment of an eight-member parliamentary committee was presented to parliament by Pascal Bandindi, a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Finance and Economy.

James Laul Deng, A Member of Parliament from Fagak argues that the committee will not solve the current economic crisis facing the country. He urges parliament to drop the proposal and instead embark on finding solutions for the economic hardship.

“The interest behind the formation of the Ad-HoC Committee is an ill interest which is not serving the interests of our people who dying on daily basis in all the towns. Do our people need the formation of the AD-Hoc Committee or they need the immediate solution?” Lual said.

MP Joy Kwaje says parliament should first discuss the problems affecting the country before forming the committee.

“Things are moving in a way that is making it difficult for an ordinary South Sudanese to be able to live. And that is what we expect to discuss here. As mothers, we cannot even afford to buy milk for our children. As women we cannot afford to lay a meal on the table. We wanted us to discuss these issues and out of it, we can now say ok because of this, let us form this or not form this. I am proposing and seconding that we do not actually go ahead with this committee. Let us have a thorough discussion of the national crisis in this Country” Kwaje

For his part, MP Gabriel Guoth Guoth says the timing of the committee is not appropriate per the ongoing economic crisis. He says the committee may not bring viable solution if formed now.

“The formation of this committee, I don’t think is right at this time because its financial implications will also encroach into this financial crisis because they will need some money; they have to go to some countries which will need some money. I think we have to dwell on the crisis of our country,”

Parliament resolved that the proposal be taken to the committee of finance and Economy for scrutiny and be bought to back on Tuesday for further discussion.
