Postcards From Sea – John Herlig is sailing the world aboard Ave del Mar

Dec 26, 2016, 08:12 PM

John’s eldest daughter, Alex, joins him to discuss cribbage, blanket forts, lighting design and possible itineraries for his circumnavigation. Three years ago, in a boatyard in Reedville, Virginia, John Herlig stumbled across a shabby, sun-bleached old sailboat called Ave del Mar. She’d been around the world a couple of times and had sat neglected, on the hard, for a few years before John came along. Unable to resist, he bought her and embarked on a painstaking restoration. The work is now finished – or as finished as work on a fifty-year-old sailboat ever can be – and John and Ave have travelled down the Intra-Coastal Waterway to Florida. In the next few weeks, they’ll set sail on the trip of a lifetime, into foreign waters and ultimately all the way around the globe. All that remains is for John to make a few decisions about where he’d like to visit John’s artful self-deprecation and infectious laugh made him a favourite among Boat Radio’s listeners when he featured in an edition of The Life Aquatic. Now he’s back with his own series, introducing the people he meets and the places he visits as he and Ave explore the world together.
