New UN Special Rep to South Sudan arrives in Juba

The new Special Representative of the Secretary General and Head of the UN Mission in South Sudan has arrived in Juba.

David Shearer from New Zealand succeeds Ellen Margrethe Løj of Denmark, who completed her assignment at the end of November 2016.

Mr. Shearer had earlier held senior positons with the United Nations including serving as the Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative, Resident Coordinator, and Humanitarian Coordinator in the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq.

Speaking on arrival, Mr Shearer said he is looking forward to his assignment.
