Radio is the most important means of communication in South Sudan.

As we commemorate World Radio Day on 13 February, Leon Willems the Director Policy and Programs for the Free Press Unlimited Organization says Radio is important in connecting and reuniting people.

“Almost half the world’s population is listening to radio on a daily basis,” he said, pointing out that radio is a strong tool for peace building.

Willems called on the government of South Sudan to open up the media landscape to promote peaceful freedom of expression.

The theme for this year's celebration is 'Radio Is You,' highlighting the significance of public engagement and the power of radio to foster the conversations and the listening needed for cooperation to tackle the challenges all humanity faces.

In this powerful interview with Philip Wani, Mr Willems also talks about the dangers of hate speech.
