United Nations agencies are launching a joint community and resilience program to prevent the spread of famine in the country.

Aweil in Northern Brh el-Ghazal will serve as one of the first pilot initiatives for the ‘integrated recovery and resilience building program’, jointly implemented by the UN Development Program-UNDP, the UN Food and Agricultural Organization, UNHCR, the World Food program and UNICEF.

Last week a team from UNDP crisis response planning team visited Aweil and held discussions with state authorities and agencies to establish how best to alleviate the biting hunger situation there.

Speaking to Radio Miraya UNDP acting country Director, Jean- Luc Stalon, said the program will have a three-pronged approach addressing basic services, social cohesion and reinvigorating the local economy.
